Blue and Gold

Shirt:  Theory; Necklace:  J. Crew;  Pants:  J. Crew;  Bag:  Longchamp (similar - on sale! - here);  Shoes:  Ferragamo (similar here and here);  Sunglasses:  Rayban;  Jacket:  Banana Republic (old, similar here)

Classic (and easy) combinations don't have to be boring!  The trick is to add some details that bring visual interest and depth.  Instead of a plain cotton-blend dress shirt (which, don't get me wrong, definitely has its place!), this off-white silk shirt falls beautifully and has a lovely sheen.  It adds a bit of femininity to an outfit that is otherwise very "borrowed from the boys".  Touches of gold throughout (from the edges of the sunglasses, to the on-trend tassel necklace, to the buckle of the shoes) subtly bring it all together.  With just a couple thoughtful details, a typical "work outfit" can go from basic to chic.

To build some of this visual interest into your wardrobe, look for basic pieces in slightly more luxurious fabrics, like silk, and fun accessories in classic colors or finishes, like this gold tassel necklace.  A silk work shirt is an investment, but you'll feel like a million bucks whenever you put it on.  With proper care (I know we all struggle not to crumple clothes at the foot of our bed or on the nearest chair when we get home...) you'll be able to wear it for many years.  There are also many online direct-to-consumer brands that are offering these quality pieces more attainable price points.  I personally love Cuyana

What do you do to take your basic work ensembles up a notch?  Or do you think an outfit like this is a bit boring, regardless of the fabric or accessories?  Let me know in the comments below!
